Biography

Thuỵ Huỳnh-Thái is an interdisciplinary artist, film director, and documentarian born and raised in Sài Gòn, Vietnam. At the age of 17, Thuỵ began her BFA degree in Film Studies at Toronto Metropolitan University, and made it her mission to push the boundaries of filmmaking through formal experiments with the cinematic form. From combining documentation with performance art, music, and mixed media arts, to working exclusively with mediums like Mini DV tapes and 16mm celluloid film, Thuỵ has developed an idiosyncratic approach to image-making, allowing her to tell intimate stories about the beauty and complexity of life for diasporic Queer Vietnamese peoples. Thuỵ's latest work, "Thiếu, Nữ" or "Girl" (2025) is a short experimental documentary, conceptualized as a final letter to her pre-transition body and family, before quietly began Hormone Replacement Therapy. The film most recently screened at the TIFF Lightbox as an official selection of the 35th Inside Out Toronto 2SLGBTQ+ Film Festival's programme: "Shorts: Local Heroes".
